Fit, Fun and From Home

April 2, 2020 @ 2:07pm | Brianna Spinnato

If you’re anything like me, then it’s likely you’re still in sweatpants and not entirely sure what day of the week it is. Navigating through these unprecedented times has been quite the learning experience. For example, it turns out that apparently one of my main hobbies is non-essential businesses. Who knew? With that being said, let’s get nostalgic.

Remember the gym? You’d see each other a few times a week, get a little sweaty and it was your most reliable pick-me-up. In a sea of people, you could stay comfortably anonymous whether you were dripping with sweat after a treadmill run or practicing mindfulness in the yoga studio. Quarantine and executive stay-at-home orders have meant putting the normalcy of our lives, such as going to the gym, on hold. However, temporarily parting ways with our trusty fitness facilities doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice working out.

Two words: creativity and innovation. In these trying times, we need to work with what we got. Before I dive into the important stuff, allow me to elaborate on my own resourcefulness. There are perks to having a younger brother who is a basketball fanatic. Absolutely nothing in this world could stand between a fifth grader and the hoop dream career he will fantasize about for the next seven years. They say, “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”, and that’s where I come in to seize the opportunity for some daily cardio. This includes a 10-year age gap, seven-inch height difference and two rounds of 1v1 basketball.

Don’t be fooled, though. I’m not doubling up on my cardio as the second round of basketball is merely a continuation of round one, which most likely ended in the classic sibling “you cheated” feud. The main point I’m trying to make is that with a new reality upon us, it’s time to tap into the inner machinations of our minds and get creative.

Despite closures and locked doors, fitness studios across the nation are doing everything in their power to keep us active from the safety of our homes. There are tons of options available, ranging from live streams to free workout videos. Whether it’s strength, cardio or flexibility, check out this list of virtual fitness classes you can join from just about anywhere.

If You Like DIY

Switch things up, get creative and use your imagination. There are tons of workout apps and fitness bloggers to draw some inspo from. Between the stay-at-home orders and growing library of online exercise videos, now is the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone from the literal comfort of your own home.
