Chase Atlantic Brings Youthful Energy to The Fillmore Silver Spring

July 26, 2019 @ 12:00am | Natalia Kolenko

Do you remember summer nights in high school, nights when your parents let you take the car, you picked up your friends and blasted music as all the night’s possibilities hung in the air? That was what it felt like to watch alt-pop band Chase Atlantic at The Fillmore Silver Spring.

From start to finish, the Australian-based trio filled the venue with an infectious, youthful energy that forced my college roommate and I dancing as if we were among close friends, free to move where the beat took us and cracking each other up in the process. Their energy combined with the crowd’s, the 70-degree night and a really good cocktail proved the perfect combination for a memorable summer concert.

On tour to promote their sophomore album PHASES (released June 28), Chase Atlantic fit somewhere on the musical scale between Post Malone and The 1975, using rap-paced lyrics over dream-like alt music with a touch of rock mixed in. Comprised of brothers Mitchel and Clinton Cave and their friend Christian Anthony, the band wrapped up the U.S. leg of their tour at The Fillmore Silver Spring on July 25.

The show kicked off with opener Lauren Sanderson, an Indiana-turned-Los Angeles rapper whose music is filled with inspirational lyrics reminiscent of her days as a motivational speaker and YouTube personality. While most concert openers are perfectly fine, Sanderson was truly a joy to watch, hyping the crowd up as she rapped, before ending her performance with encouraging declaration for the crowd to never give up on their dreams.

Soon to follow, Chase Atlantic picked up where Sanderson left off and turned the sound and energy up to 10. As soon as they hit the stage, concert-goers went wild, dancing to every song and shout-singing every lyric. It was impossible not to feel their excitement and join in as well. While each new song brought on a round of cheering, “Friends,” “LOVE IS (NOT) EASY” and “STUCKINMYBRAIN” were some of the fan-favorites of the night.

Other highlights include Chase Atlantic’s stage effects, including their smoke jets and lights, the band and crowd singing “Happy Birthday” to a fellow band member and the Fillmore itself – a genuinely nice venue with good views of the stage from most spots, good drinks and not to mention a refreshing change from the usual DC spots.

Maybe it was a combination of the summer heat, the green tea and vodka cocktail that hit the spot and the carefree energy of the Gen Z crowd filling up the venue, but Chase Atlantic proved host to one of the most fun nights of my summer, and I think any of their incredibly devoted fans would agree.
