Even as some stay at home orders are lifted and businesses reopen, the reality of a traditional movie theater is unknown. Local spots are getting creative and some are even returning to a retro stand-by: the drive-in. If you’re dying to go to the movies somewhere other than your couch, check out these options below.

Drive-In Movies at the Workhouse Arts Center

Through the end of the month, Lorton’s Workhouse Arts Center will show titles like Labyrinth and Hot Fuzz. Purchase a packaged snack box or bring your own food to enjoy during the show. As the summer storms have been rolling in lately, shows are subject to cancellation, and Workhouse will let you know the status of your show via Facebook by 3 p.m. the day of. Tickets may only be purchased online and parking spots are filled on a first-come, first serve basis. Social distancing guidelines will also be enforced. Tickets $30 per car. Gates 8:15 p.m., show 9 p.m. Workhouse Arts Center: 9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton, VA; www.workhousearts.org

Hull’s Drive-In

Got a day to kill and want to take a scenic drive out to Lexington, VA? Head to Hull’s Drive-In, which boasts the title of the nation’s first non-profit, community-owned drive-in theater. Tune in for a single or double feature, or rent the whole theater on a weeknight for a party that’s still socially distant. Ticket sales are all online, and pets are welcome to attend. Movies at Hull’s are played rain or shine. You can also purchase concessions online or via your phone. Tickets $10+. Gates 7 p.m., show 8 p.m. Hull’s Drive-In: 2367 Lee Hwy, Lexington, VA; www.hullsdrivein.com

Park Up DC

Broccoli City and Events DC have combined forces to create Park Up DC, which will show movies and other entertainment on a 45 ft. HD LED screen. You can enjoy &pizza or traditional movie snacks delivered to you as well, all ordered from the convenience of your phone. Movies are a balance of family friendly titles like Sonic the Hedgehog to classics like Friday and Jurassic Park. Various times and ticket prices. Park Up DC: RFK Stadium Lot 5, 2400 East Capitol St. NE, D.C; www.parkupdc.com

Walmart Drive-In

While not all details have been announced, Walmart announced plans to turn their Supercenters into drive-ins. With lots of Walmart locations around the DMV, this will make drive-ins more accessible to those who may not want or be able to traverse to a more adventurous location. Shows are slated to begin in August; check walmartdrive-in.com for details.
