On Friday, September 29 at the Waldorf Astoria, guests were draped in shades of pink that rivaled a “Barbie” screening, but the event this time was for Planned Parenthood Metropolitan Washington’s (PPMW) 2023 Impact Gala.
This year’s honorees included Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD 8th District), Maryland State Senator Ariana B. Kelly and patient advocate Brittany House. Hosted by award-winning director Tonya Lewis, the night began by honoring music artist Maggie Rogers with the Disruptor Award.
“I don’t think there is anything disruptive about telling the truth,” Rogers said when accepting the award. “I am terrified for the future and having a uterus, and my job is to amplify the message.”
Rogers credited the award to the Planned Parenthood volunteers she has had at her shows the last six years to spread awareness about reproductive health rights and encourage donations.
As the dinner was nearing the end and the final honoree left the stage, the gala closed out with an auction where guests raised over $250,000 for the Abortion Access Fund, which will directly be used to support an individual’s access to abortion care. Photos by Ben Droz.
