Before hockey season started heating up, On Tap took some time to catch up with the Caps. We picked the brains of eight players about their time spent off the ice, and what profession they might have pursued if not hockey. Read on for the inside scoop on these players’ hobbies and aspirations.
How do you spend your time off the ice?

“As a first-time dad [with] a six-month-old boy, pretty much all my time away from the rink is with my son and my wife. If I have some free time, I’m a pretty relaxed guy. I’ll usually put on the TV and relax, or sit outside and read a book. When I’m away from the rink, I try to keep it pretty chill.”

“I’m from Canada, and there’s a bunch of lakes where I’m from, so I like to go up to the lake and spend time on the water.”

“I just hang out at home and rest. In the offseason, I go golfing, see my family and friends, and just get away from hockey for a little bit. It’s usually mental rest.”

“I think it’s more of just a relaxation time, especially in the summer. I like to get out on the golf course or out on the lake as much as possible.”

“I probably would be working with my dad. He owns his own company, and I would assume that I probably would have taken a little bit more of an interest in that and tried to learn the business a bit more.”

“I think I would probably still be doing something in sports – maybe sports psychology or something along those lines.”

“I probably would try to be a professional soccer player.”

“You’d like to think that hopefully you’d still be around the game somehow. Maybe a firefighter or something along the lines of working for a team.”

“I’d be a professional hunter, or a professional taste tester. I love playing baseball, so maybe a bullpen catcher.”

“Hopefully, I’d be in something in the medical field applied to sports.”
