The Soul of Greece: Songs of Vassilis Tsitsanis
Join award-winning multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Dr. Spyros Koliavasilis for an unforgettable evening celebrating the life, music, and enduring legacy of Vassilis Tsitsanis (1915–1984), one of Greece's most influential composers and the architect of modern Greek urban folk music.
More than a concert, The Soul of Greece is an immersive experience that brings to life the history, culture, and spirit of twentieth-century Greece through the timeless songs of Tsitsanis. Blending live performance with engaging historical narrative, the program introduces audiences to rebetiko—the influential musical tradition often called the "Greek blues," recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The program features selections spanning Tsitsanis's extraordinary career—from his earliest compositions of the late 1930s, through the hardships of World War II, to the beloved songs of the postwar era that helped define modern Greek music. Audiences will hear iconic works (such as "Synnefiasmeni Kyriaki (Cloudy Sunday)," while discovering the stories and historical events that inspired them.
A recipient of the 2025 Maryland Heritage Award, Dr. Spyros Koliavasilis is internationally recognized for his mastery of rebetiko and Traditional Greek Music. With more than 25 years of performance and teaching experience, he combines expressive artistry, historical insight, and authentic performance on traditional instruments to bring this remarkable musical tradition vividly to life. Koliavasilis is joined by his protégé Nicholas Mitrione who mesmerizes audiences with his brilliant bouzouki playing.
Whether you are discovering Greek music for the first time or returning to songs you have loved for years, The Soul of Greece: Songs of Vassilis Tsitsanis offers an inspiring and memorable journey through the music, history, and soul of Greece.
