More detailsAbout This Event
New York City-based artist Maren Hassinger will debut her performance piece “Birthright” at the National Portrait Gallery June 25. “Birthright” (2022) explores the complexity of individual family histories through collective ritual in a live performance. Hassinger will show her 2005 video, also called “Birthright,” which follows her meeting her uncle for the first time and learning about the paternal branch of her family tree. She’ll invite audience members to share their own family stories and to twist newspaper, a ritual she performs throughout the video. Postponed from 2020, the long-awaited performance is part of the Portrait Gallery’s IDENTIFY series, which focuses on those who are missing from the museum’s collections.
