On January 26, acclaimed folk-rock band The Wood Brothers returned to the 9:30 Club for the first time in 3 years. Prior to Wednesday’s performance, the trio of Oliver Wood, Chris Wood, and Jano Rix had last played the Club on January 17, 2019 while promoting their 2018 album “One Drop of Truth,” which received a Grammy Nomination for Best Americana Album. This time around the band was promoting their new album, “Kingdom In My Mind,” which they created in 2020 and recorded in their Nashville studio.
David Wax and Susan Slezak of David Wax Museum kicked off the show and lit the fuse on a memorable evening of folk music. The Wood Brothers soon followed and took the stage to a packed house. The evening’s setlist included a large selection of the songs featured on the album such as “Little Blue, Alabaster,” “Little Bit Sweet,” and “Little Bit Broken.” The album blends new experimental music with old familiar Wood Brothers elements, a technique that has helped define and redefine their unique style over the course of 17 albums. The Wood Brothers also made it a b point to include some fan favorites from previous albums, including “Postcards from Hell,” “Honey Jar,” and “Luckiest Man.” The band continues their tour into New England before heading out west at the end of February.
