Forces of Nature: Renwick Invitational 2020
Discover how art and nature reframe perspective and offer moments of release during times of uncertainty at the Renwick Gallery and online. “Forces of Nature: Renwick Invitational 2020” features artists Lauren Fensterstock, Timothy Horn, Debora Moore and Rowland Ricketts, and presents contemporary craft work that examines the long history of art’s power to engage with the natural world through unconventional and highly personal perspectives. Art Chats @ 5
Jump-start your weekend with art. Join the National Museum of Women in the Arts’ educators online every Friday for informal 30-minute art chats about selected artworks in the collection. Discuss a new sampling of art each week. You can even enjoy your favorite happy hour drink or snack during the sessions. Registration required and limited to 20 participants each week. Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It!
After seven months, Arena Stage is hosting its first live performance since the start of the pandemic. Performances of “Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It!” will run October 23-30 at The Wharf. This limited engagement features two-time Helen Hayes Award winner E. Faye Butler as she takes on the role of impassioned female freedom fighter Fannie Lou Hamer. This 50-minute call to action shines a light on the importance of exercising your right to vote in the 2020 election. Arena is one of seven venues permitted to resume live outdoor performances under the District’s Phase Two live entertainment pilot program. The Pumpkin Extravaganza
On the hunt for some socially distant fall fun? Yoga For BLM
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is teaming up with Evolving Lives Body and Mind to present a biweekly, donation-based vinyasa yoga session to support the movement of #blacklivesmatter. The power vinyasa-style class is focused on traditional yoga postures with a longer hold in foundational and grounding poses to support safety and alignment. All levels welcome. Tickets $5.50-$25. Dear Mapel
“Dear Mapel,” written and performed by Psalmayene 24, is a mix of theater performance and live multi-camera video production and effects work that breaks out of the confines of Zoom and drops audiences into a rich, theatrical world. Natsu Onoda Power directs this hybrid workshop presentation exploring Psalm’s relationship with his deceased father through a series of letters, both real and imagined, and asks if it is possible to alter relationships we have with those who have died. D.C. artist Jabari Exum (Marvel’s “Black Panther”) will provide percussion with dramaturgy by Arena Stage’s Jocelyn Clarke and videography by Emic Films and VidCo. Free to attend.
