Quarantine Social Club Vol. 3: May 1-3
April 30, 2020 @ 9:30pm
Welcome to District Fray’s Quarantine Social Club roundup, where our chief anti-boredom officer (just kidding, assistant editor) gives you things to do when you have nothing to do. Below are some events from our friends around town that we think are worth checking out this weekend.
A Day IN: D.C. festival
This all-day virtual party, socially distanced “group hug” of sorts brings together members of D.C.’s community with businesses, creatives, restaurants, venues and more. On Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to midnight, pop into BYT’s livestream for interactive fun. The event is free, but you can make a donation that will go directly to the participants in the festival who are making it happen. For a full schedule, click here.
Filmfest D.C.
Filmfest D.C. has pivoted to digital viewing, and this week brings a new crop of movies for you to safely enjoy from the comfort of your own couch. This week marks the opening of the Argentine comedy hit Lion’s Heart, as well as the animated short Once Upon a Time. For more information, check out our interview with Filmfest D.C.’s director Tony Gittens. To view these films visit www.filmfestdc.org.
Laura Marling’s Stay Away Show
Laura Marling, who released the excellent album Song for our Daughter earlier this year, will appear on La Blogotheque‘s Instagram live as part of the blog’s Stay Away Shows series this Saturday. Listen to this dreamy album while you cook your breakfast on this lazy Saturday morning, then tune in @blogotheque on Instagram at 1 p.m. to enjoy the closest thing you can get to a concert right now.
Other Things to do This Weekend
Bandcamp has once again decided to waive fees to give 100 percent of all purchases to musicians on Friday, May 1. It’s a good time to spend money on music if you’re able and includes plenty of DMV favorites. Check out this list of local experimental musicians from the District for inspiration, and this list of artists and labels offering donations, special merch and more.
Get sucked into a black hole (figuratively) of stories, documentaries, TV and movies around the UFO sightings/government confirmation of said sightings.
Are you a musician? Do you know or love a local musician? Send them Listen Local First’s DMV Covid Music Check-In survey – the organization wants to know how it can redirect resources to members of the community who need them, see how local musicians are feeling and faring, and make sure voices are heard. You can access the survey or send it along through this link.
