Recipes for Resistance: Chef Alam Mendez Leads Community Salsa Workshop Supporting La Pluma Theatre
Recipes for Resistance is an interactive culinary workshop and fundraising evening where food, culture, and community come together in support of local theatre. Inspired by Ross Irons’ article Recipes for Resistance, the event explores how culture, food, and education can serve as tools for community strength during challenging times.
During this hands-on experience, chef Alam Mendez and the team from Apapacho Taqueria will guide guests through the preparation of traditional Mexican salsas picantes, sharing techniques, ingredients, and the cultural traditions behind these vibrant sauces.
The evening is designed to be interactive, educational, and community-centered. Guests will:
- Learn techniques for preparing different styles of Mexican salsa
- Discuss the cultural significance of food during times of social tension
- Connect with fellow supporters of local arts and community initiatives
- Enjoy specially crafted mezcal cocktails
- Be recognized as supporting donors of La Pluma Theatre’s upcoming production
Proceeds from the evening will support La Pluma Theatre’s upcoming bilingual production, The Ladybird of Saint John (La Pájara de San Juan). The play follows two sisters navigating immigration status, class differences, and family responsibility during a period of intensified immigration enforcement in the United States.
