About This Event
Kit Armstrong will make his debut at The Phillips Collection with a program that explores how composers across the centuries have encoded extra-musical “images” in sound, inviting us to imagine narrative or pictorial scenes in our mind’s eye. Beginning with the early example of William Byrd’s The Bells, Armstrong will trace the manifestations of visual stimulus both real and imagined through the music of Rameau, CPE Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, and the tone-painting of musical “impressionism” typified by Debussy’s Images.
