Join PORTAL, the National Portrait Gallery’s Scholarly Center, to explore LGBTQ+ representation in portraiture! Artist and activist Riva Lehrer will speak with the subject of her piece in the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, Havana-born writer Achy Obejas. Their conversation will explore themes of queer identity and disability. It will also discuss how Lehrer created Obejas’ portrait and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Taína Caragol — the National Portrait Gallery curator of painting, sculpture & Latinx art — and historian Mindy Farmer will moderate.
