Marly McFly is a self-taught artist from Newport News, Virginia. His pop art workings have been displayed in prominent galleries in New York, Paris, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and beyond. This Black History Month, his “Black Futures” exhibition is dedicated to the self-starters shifting generational narratives via community-centric thinking.
“Black people are at the forefront of all cultural movements. I wanted this collection to celebrate our joy rather than paint images that uphold tropes associated with identity. Young entrepreneurs are tackling obstacles differently in professional realms. We are the wayshowers who no longer tolerate demeaning behaviors. My paintings are for those who demand their worth and insist on enjoying life,” McFly explained.
Each canvas examines that which is traditionally overlooked, as the artist remains elusive himself. Mcfly’s vibrant colors portray brilliance outside European beauty standards while celebrating muses’ kinks, coils, and curves. His “Black Futures” exhibition offers recognition facing the nuances he is a product of and is geared toward collective progression. – B. Alysse
